One Day symposium on Artificial Intelligence
Two Decades of the Center for Soft Computing Research:
Deep Learning and Granular Computing

The Center for Soft Computing Research: A National Facility (CSCR) was established at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata, in 2004 by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), New Delhi under its prestigious IRHPA program. It formally started its journey on October 25, 2005. The Center has been declared in 2010 as an Associate Institution of ISI.

Research activities are performed in enriching as well as developing new soft computing technologies in the framework of modern AI and data science. These include granular computing, computational theory of perception, z-numbers and uncertainty quantification, deep learning and explainable AI, human-centered robotics, theory of cognition, cybernetics, information processing in plants and small animals, and machine-mind development, with fore-front application areas like granular data mining, granulated deep learning, cognitive vision, video analytics, social network analysis, bioinformatics, pollution analytics, safety analytics, remote sensing image analysis, assistive technology, and computing with words.

The Center has so far been successful not only in generating high quality research output and manpower, but also in nurturing and upgrading the soft computing community in the country. To commemorate the completion of its twenty years of glorious existence, a day long symposium on Artificial Intelligence titled – Two Decades of the Center for Soft Computing Research: Deep Learning and Granular Computing, is being organized on 29th October 2025 in the Platinum Jubilee Auditorium, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. The event is sponsored by the National Science Chair Grant of Prof. Sankar K Pal with CSCR. It is envisioned to expand the outreach of the ongoing activities with eminent scientists from other parts of the globe.
